I don't think there is a problem with him joining as long as he's numbers are undetectable. I am a reserve officer In the Los Angeles Police department I disclosed my status on my initial medical application. and provided copies of my test results. I think the Atlanta police dept are a bunch of redneck hicks anyway.Isuggest he sue their ass off and apply for a different department.I work fulltime as a surgical nurse I contracted HIV from a needle stick injury in .05
I have to side with the city policy this time. Due to the physical nature of the job especially the altercations with those that resist the chances of trans. are very high blood to blood. A police officer is exposed to communicable diseases at a rate far higher than the general public. I retired from active EMS work because of risk of trans. but exposure to everything under the sun. Be real when ur poz ur disabled no matter how we fight it, med side effects and viral progression, debilitate.
That is discrimination & his health condition should not prevent him from being hired.

Well, I have been certainly treated these last 18 years like I am "disabled" and that is just part of the fear and ignorance that continues to surround this disease. I have been amazingly healthy these last 18 years. Why? I cold sight many reasons, but for the most part, I made sure I didn't get reinfected (that is always a source of debate), I pumped iron and generally stayed healthy. I have always resented being treated as "afflicted" or "diseased" or "disabled".
