There are some issues which could possibly contribute to the apparent difference with people's experiences and some other studies. One is that the study evaluated mean age at which individual conditions occurred, and did not assess the prevalence of multi-morbidity in participants. Also--and this affects other VA studies--the HIV-negative control group appears less healthy than the control groups used in many other studies.

These comments contradict prior information put out by AIDSMEDS Newsletters stating that persons with HIV were prematurely aging and being diagnosed with various diseases that older persons traditionally get. I know several HIV+ men in my EMA that are under 55 diagnosed with osteoporosis, two with Sjogrenâ??s Syndrome. Many people diagnosed with unusually high cholesterol and high triglycerides, diabetes and various forms of arthritis, along with varying degrees of memory loss and blips.
