A doctor who treated people with HIV/AIDS pleaded guilty to federal charges of health care fraud committed from 1995 to 2001, The Desert Sun reports. He faces up to 50 years in prison.

According to the article, George Steven Kooshian, MD, fraudulently billed health insurance providers for medications related to HIV/AIDS and hepatitis. The providers, which included Medicare, lost about $661,000.

Kooshian admitted to billing providers for medications patients no longer received and to giving patients smaller doses of medications although he billed providers for full doses.

In one case, a patient thought he was getting intravenous immunogammaglobulin for his peripheral neuropathy. Instead, the patient received saline with vitamins.

Kooshian is scheduled to be sentenced May 11.
