The Salt Lake City LGBTQ+ and HIV health clinic Utah AIDS Foundation (UAF) will now be known as  UAF Legacy Health and is expanding its services to include primary care, according to Fox13.

UAF Legacy Health currently offers mental health services and testing for HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as well as case management and support. Later this month, the nonprofit will begin prescribing PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, the daily pills and long-acting injectables that prevent HIV, and in September, after a building remodel that includes a new clinic, it will start offering primary care services.

The expansion, for which the Salt Lake County Council allocated $2 million, has been in the works for more than three years, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

“There has never been a clinic designed from the ground up to be culturally competent, to be aware of the nuances—the needs of LGBTQ+ people,” UAF Legacy Health’s development director, May Bryant, told Fox13. “Knowing how many people we will help and the ripple effects that will happen as a result—it’s extremely gratifying.”

Established in 1985 after the Utah Department of Health reported 17 people living with AIDS in the state, UAF was one of the first organizations in the state to recognize the need for public education about the epidemic as well as assistance for people living with HIV and AIDS.

“For most adults who are LGBTQ+, there is a hesitancy to seek care at the primary care level due to past experiences,” Bryant said. “So most patients end up waiting and present in the ER with advanced illness that could have been easily treated.”

“Primary care is crucial for Utah’s LGBTQ+ community due to historically systemic barriers, stigmas, and discrimination that have led to hesitations or difficulties in seeking routine health services,” UAF’s website states.

The remodel will include 10 exam rooms, five mental health therapy offices and the addition of three full-time providers, according to The Tribune. The clinic will accept patients with or without health insurance.
