That ’80s Show

by Kayreth Williams

The ACT UP Oral History Project video collection, by Sarah Schulman and Jim Hubbard, reminisces about the heyday of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power/New York (ACT UP/New York). Surviving members like Maria Maggenti and Patrick Moore recount storming Alfonse D’Amato’s Republican fundraiser (complete with men in drag) and seizing the FDA shortly after ACT UP’s inception, in 1987. Snag a snippet from www.actuporalhistory.org or the New York City and San Francisco public libraries.

The Normal Heart, ACT UP and GMHC grandpapi Larry Kramer’s landmark drama, returns to New York City’s Public Theater this season, 19 years after its debut there. Set in an era before HIV meds, Heart indicts a society that ignored AIDS instead of stepping up to its challenges. Drop by www.publictheater.org or call 212.239.6200 for cast and ticket info.
