Well, G Whiz!

by David Gelman, MD

Any HIVer with hepatitis C would love to “clear” it. But many may also have GBV-C, the hep C look-alike formerly known as hep G—and that one you may want to keep. Not only is it apparently harmless, but test-tube studies presented at last February’s Retrovirus powwow (see page 13) are among the latest to suggest that G might actually slow down HIV’s progress when you’re not on HAART (and if you are, G might help your meds work better.) So should you run to find out if you have G...and how to keep it? Nah. Just prick up your ears for future G findings and how they might be helpful to HIV therapy. Now that would really hit the G spot.
