Only A Test

Google “home HIV test,” and Discreet’s website pops up. “Three minutes could save you a lifetime,” it swears. Sure, if you want a lifetime of ignorance. The $29.95 kit is one of a host of e-vailable tests that may be fake. “Consumers should know there is only one FDA-approved product,” said a rep from the agency, which has ID’d more than a dozen fraudulent tests. Richard Quattrocchi, president of Home Access Health Corp.—marketer of the single approved test (www.homeaccess.com)—has complaints from 16 distraught customers who say they got bogus results from Discreet alone. Is that a racket we hear? True to its name, Discreet has no listed phone number. Quattrocchi estimates that if the “company” can afford Google’s link placement, it must be raking in the dough.
