Villagers with HIV in Xiongqiao, in China’s Henan Province, rallied last summer to demand better care and payment of their $36 monthly aid check — only to be attacked by 600 riot police. Witnesses report that cops beat them, smashed windows and TVs and arrested 18 people. One-fourth of the villagers have HIV, most from selling blood in government-approved, unsafe centers.
