Maine Idea

by Alex MacDonald

If you lack health insurance—and Medicaid or ADAP won’t cover needed care—point your legislators to Maine. The 23rd state has set out to build a universal-care plan that won’t trash its craggy budget. Mainers hope to grab $80 million of the $275 mil that taxpayers and insurers have been bleeding annually as the uninsured pack emergency rooms, spiking hospital rates. Savings will flow back to residents, insuring them in the first place.
