The Gift, Louise Hogarth’s gritty documentary on barebacking and bug-chasing, is earnest and serious. But in the wake of similar coverage in Rolling Stone and The New York Times, the exposé feels a bit re-gifted. As the flick tours the lurid underworld of conversion parties, it never looks beyond hedonism and clichéd prevention critiques at how depression, addiction and homophobia fuel the drive to sero-connect.
