The Rights Stuff

by Suzy Martin

University of Rome researchers checked the results of a 1997 World Health Organization/UNAIDS survey of 121 nations for HIVers' human rights -- or the lack thereof. Take a gander at a positive Earthling's chances of getting legal protection rather than prosecution or persecution:

  • Number of countries requiring official reporting of AIDS cases: 72
  • Number ensuring confidentiality by coded or anonymous reporting: 24
  • Percentage of HIVers living in countries with confidential notification: 3.6
  • Percentage of HIVers protected by laws that prohibit discrimination: 5.5
  • Number of countries that promote condom use: 13
  • Percentage that require screening of donated blood: 42
  • Number with a national AIDS committee: 47
  • Percentage of HIVers living in countries that enforce quarantine : 25
