“Yippee!” I thought at the arrival of Transgender and HIV (Haworth). “A book that speaks to me and is about me.” Instead, what Walter Bockting, PhD, and Shelia Kirk, MD, have done is write around me. Transsexuals themselves, they begin by offering interesting insights into the world of gender benders. Then the book dives into a rapids of facts, figures and footnotes like a naked Roman into a pool of virgins. This reader promptly drowned. The authors just never found a coherent point of view. Is this a help guide for trannies? An intro for the novice? Worse, we’re pummeled with how hard it is to be transsexual, but never given any solutions. This book definitely needed to be written...by someone else.
