Warts Up, Doc?

by Clarinda MacLow

Could it be? A magic bullet to eliminate those gross growths caused by genital and anal human papilloma virus (HPV)? Very likely -- and that's especially good news for HIVers, whom HPV seems to favor. A recent study at Belgium's Rega Institute found that three out of four patients creamed or injected twice a year with the antiviral cidofovir had "complete responses," and at least two remained wart-free over the next two years. For HIVers and others with this most promiscuous STD in the U.S., that might mean the end of irritating, embarrassing and contagious warts -- plus periodic rounds of -- ouch! -- laser surgery or cryotherapy removal. The Belgians are now working to see if cidofovir has any effect against HPV-related anal and cervical tumors. We're itching for the results.
