In Vogue

by Suzy Martin

How Do I Look?—the drag-ballroom community’s own answer to Jennie Livingston’s big-ticket docu Paris Is Burning (1990)has street cred but few funders, long delaying the project’s release. Director Wolfgang Busch has promised royalties to every diva who works it; participants have planned an arts and HIV prevention program for youth in Harlem with the proceeds. The film features breathtaking Vogue and Futuristic performances, plus straight-shooting interviews with Burning’s Octavia St. Laurent on surviving AIDS; Carmen Xtravaganza on castration, fashion design and being mother of the House of Xtravaganza; and AIDS funeral footage flowing into an animation sequence of viral agents attacking CD4s. Sound cool? To donate, click on www.howdoilooknyc.org—and look for Look at festivals next year, with a college tour by its stars talking up prevention.
