December 2002

Soreheads

by Alex MacDonald

Where there’s syphilis, there’s HIV. That’s why experts are exasperated that the rising rate of syphilis among gay and bi guys—first seen in San Francisco five years ago—is going national. New York City reported a 90 percent jump this year; a 10-fold increase was found among Minnesota Marys. The classic causes—“prevention fatigue” and over-confidence in HAART—were cited; new online outreach is in sight.
