November 2001

Dateline Dec. 1

by Emily Salzfass

What if they gave a World AIDS Day and nobody came? December 1 is getting older, just like the rest of us, evidenced by the fact that the main surviving New York City event, the American Run for the End of AIDS (AREA), is wheelchair accessible for the first time ever. The 2001 theme -- "I Care, Do You?" -- comes off like a dare, but with attention and attendance plummeting in recent years, it's a fair question. Still, there looks to be some good events lined up. AREA's 10th-annual "Out of the Darkness" rally and candlelight march will commence with a reading of names at the gay community center. The NAMES Project, from its new Atlanta digs, will display sections at each of its 34 chapters worldwide. But if that's not enough to get you out, the Elton John Foundation has thrown a rhinestone-studded hat into the ring. On December 5, for a modest $250, you can watch Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Billie Jean King and Elton John in a tennis four-way, while on December 12, the Foundation throws an L.A. concert starring Sting and Matchbox 20.
