An HIV diagnosis no longer automatically excludes you from a lifesaving organ transplant. Now HIVers are lining up with the best to secure a new liver or kidney. UCSF's Lynda Frassetto, MD, reports that eight of her first nine transplanters are doing well. Cyclosporine, an immuno-suppressant used to prevent organ rejection, was once thought to be a pitfall for HIVers. Frassetto's peeps proved otherwise -- on cyclosporine, they benefited with boosted CD4s.
