‘Silence is Death’ for Florida’s Blacks
September 11, 2006—The HIV rate among black Floridians ages 15-44 is 6 times the rate among white people, according to a report released last week by the Florida Department of Health. That’s down from 11 times the white rate in 1999 but still considered “unacceptable.” The study, “Silence is Death: The Crisis of HIV/AIDS in Florida’s Black Communities,” also outlines new prevention strategies, ranging from increased testing to targeting black MSM’s.
