Roughly 30% of new HIV infections last year in Thailand occurred among married women—a rate higher than among men who have sex with men (MSM) or intravenous drug users—prompting health officials to announce plans last week to change their prevention strategy. They will now encourage married couples to practice the U.S.-favored ABC prevention strategy (Abstinence, Be faithful, use Condoms) and to get tested for HIV regularly. Also, authorities will distribute 5 million free condoms to married women by the end of the year.
