After IAC, 160 Want Canadian Asylum

September 19, 2006—One hundred sixty HIV positive foreigners who visited Toronto last month for the International AIDS Conference are requesting political asylum in Canada on a variety of grounds. The Canadian government requires that such applicants prove they would suffer “cruel and unusual treatment” if returned home and may reject anyone excessively burdening the national health care system.
