HIV Bulldozes South African Farmers

September 27, 2006—Small-scale farmers in South Africa lose a quarter of their income to AIDS-related expenses, according to a study presented at the country’s National Agricultural Economist Conference. Health care and family members’ inability to work are the main costs, researchers found; farmers are often forced to sell essential farm supplies to purchase meds.
