South African Health Ministry Holds the Garlic

October 30, 2006—After years of hostile relations, the South African government has begun meeting with the nation’s leading AIDS org, the Treatment Action Campaign, to help expand access to antiretrovirals. The country’s notorious health minister, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, had previously slowed the med rollout, claiming that beetroot and garlic effectively fight HIV, but this September Deputy President Phumzile Mlamba-Ngcuka took over control of the national AIDS policy.
