A new study concludes that the Centers for Disease Control’s new focus on encouraging HIV testing is not the most effective prevention strategy among injection drug users. The study, reported in the American Journal of Public Health, found testing already prevalent among 1,543 injection drug users interviewed in five cities and that needle exchanges, drug substitution therapies and access to HIV meds better prevented transmission of the HIV virus in this particular risk group.
