High Rates of Dementia in Africa

Due to extremely high rates of HIV-related dementia in Africa, HIV is now challenging Alzheimer’s and stroke as the leading cause of dementia worldwide, according to a study by Johns Hopkins University. In Uganda, 31 percent of HIV positive study participants had HIV-related dementia, which can be treated and even reversed with antiretrovirals.
