Chinese AIDS Activist Under House Arrest
Local officials have placed AIDS activist and medical doctor Gao Yaojie under house arrest to prevent her from traveling to Beijing to apply for a U.S. visa. She was to arrive in the States in March to receive an award for her women’s rights work. Yaojie became known in the 1990s for exposing government-supported blood-buying programs that infected 50,000 Chinese farmers with HIV.
