India is believed to have the highest number of people with HIV in the world at 5.7 million but information is scarce and news reports suggest an epidemic of anti-HIV stigma. Recently, an HIV positive boy was denied treatment because doctors were afraid to operate on him. And a new study finds that less than half of all Indian women have even heard of AIDS—and that their ignorance may be helping drive up the national infection rate.
