HIV’s First Stop Was Haiti
Haiti hosts the oldest strain of HIV seen anywhere outside of Africa and is the source of most strains found in North America and Europe, according to a study presented at the 14th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Los Angeles. The strain, HIV-1 group M subtype B, is believed to have migrated to Haiti from Africa around 1966.
