About half of all new HIV transmissions occur shortly after the positive partner is infected and does not yet know his or her status, according to a report in the April issue of the Journal of Infectious Diseases. People with HIV are especially infectious just after they’ve become infected with the virus themselves, because their bodies haven’t yet begun to produce antibodies.
