Illinois School HIV Disclosure Law Could Be Revoked

An Illinois law that requires state and local health officials to report the names of HIV-positive students to the principals of their schools may be revoked, the Daily Journal reports.

According to the article, the 1987 law allows principals to reveal the identities of HIV-positive students to school nurses and to disclose to teachers if they have students with the virus in their classes, but not their names.

State Representative LaShawn Ford (D–Chicago) is sponsoring a bill to revoke the law, which he believes compromises the privacy of families. Proponents of the law maintain that it is acceptable as long as proper discretion is used.

Last year, the Illinois House with a 65–42 vote rejected a similar bill. Illinois is one of five states that require disclosure of a student’s HIV status to school officials.
