Too Churchy for Bush?

Thursday, August 25, 2005—The Bush administration was out separating church and state on Monday—suspending the flow of taxpayer dollars to the teenage virginity pledge group Silver Ring Thing because, officials said, its Christian activities overlap with the rest of its work. The Pennsylvania-based nonprofit “may not have included adequate safeguards to clearly separate… religious activities from the federally funded activities,” according to a letter from Harry Wilson at the Department of Health and Human Services. In May, the American Civil Liberties Union sued Silver Ring Thing, saying it was “permeated with religion.” The group calls itself “faith-based” but secular, too—“Kids can choose,” as a Silver Ring Thing lawyer stressed again this week.
