Global Fund Axes Myanmar, Uganda
by Staff
Monday, August 29, 2005—Two of the world’s AIDS-neediest countries just
got snipped from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and
Malaria, putting a range of treatment programs at risk. Myanmar, lately identified as ground zero
of the Asian HIV epidemic, lost a $98 million grant because, Fund
administrators said, the military government’s new travel restrictions
hamper medical access. Meantime, $201 million destined for Uganda
was temporarily suspended over allegations of financial mismanagement
in the Ministry of Health. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni promises a full investigation, although with abstinence chums like George Bush also providing greenbacks, there’s no cause for alarm just yet.
