Friday, October 28, 2005—On Wednesday, the Senate voted against a spending measure that would have diverted $60 million from Centers For Disease Control (CDC) building expansion plans to boost state AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAPs), nine of which are so underfunded that they have waiting lists for people with HIV who need help paying for treatment. The funds in the defeated bill, sponsored by Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), will revert instead to building a scenic Japanese garden and stream, among other upgrades at the CDC’s Atlanta-based offices.
