S. Africa Health Minister Shames and Blames

November 22, 2005—In response to yesterday’s UN report criticizing South Africa for treatment failures, Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang laid blame today with the pre-1994 apartheid government. Meanwhile, her controversial views on treating AIDS with vitamins were landing her in hot water with the Democratic Alliance party, which announced that she may be held in contempt of court for failing to implement a July 2002 court-ordered prevention and antiretroviral program for pregnant HIV positive women.
