Indian Highways Drive Up Transmission Rates

December 7, 2005—Truckers’ contact with sex workers along India’s national highway system may be an important link
in the spread of HIV on the subcontinent, according to an article in
the New York Times yesterday.
During stopovers at home between their months on the road, the truckers
infect their wives—in a cycle that is protected by the taboo on
discussing sex.
