US OKs Generic Imports to Poor Countries
December 21, 2005—The United States signed on to a World Trade Organization amendment allowing developing countries to import generic versions of much-needed patented HIV meds. The clause, added to Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), indicates that countries without the capacity to produce generics may import them. It must be ratified by two-thirds of the WTO by December 1, 2007 in order to go into effect.
