Study: C’mon Get Happy
December 21, 2005—Thirty people living with HIV in Staten Island, New York have something to be happy about: Next Friday, they’ll graduate from a nine-week course in improving overall contentment. The tools, according to Australian researcher and instructor Adrian McInman: meditation, special breathing and various tricks for reducing stress. “No one wants to dwell in misery,” says McInman, who previously practiced his smiley craft on people with diabetes, autism and post-traumatic stress disorder. The 30 positive New Yorkers in the final stretch this week at his Adult Day Health Care Program—housed at St. Elizabeth Ann’s Health Care and Rehabilitation Center—are his first HIV clients.
