December 30, 2005—A new study suggests tinkering with CD8 immune cells may rejuvenate them when they’ve grown pooped from fighting chronic HIV infection. Researchers found that when they prevented mouse immune cells’ PD-1 receptors from binding to a molecule called PD-L1, the cells sprang back to life.
