In March of this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it would be awarding more than $185 million to prevent HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender people, particularly African Americans and Latinos. This month, the CDC announced the 17 organizations that will receive the funding.

According to a CDC press release, $125 million will be allotted over three years to state and local health departments across the country. That funding falls into two different areas: Category 1 focuses on increasing the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and Category 2 focuses on engaging more people in HIV care.

The health departments receiving these funds include:

  • San Francisco Department of Health (funded for both Cat 1 and 2)
  • Chicago Department of Health (funded for both Cat 1 and 2)
  • Louisiana Department of Health (funded for both Cat 1 and 2)
  • Baltimore Department of Health (funded for Cat 1)

  • Los Angeles County Public Health Department (funded for Cat 1)

An additional $60.5 million over four years is being invested by the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Minority AIDS Initiative Fund (SMAIF). These funds also go to health departments and will target HIV prevention among gay and bisexual men of color. Recipients include:
