Time for a UN Agency for Women?
July 10, 2006—HIV is putting an ever greater strain on the problems of women worldwide, the UN’s Special Envoy for HIV in Africa told a high-level panel last week, urging the world body to create an agency specifically addressing women’s issues. The envoy, Stephen Lewis, cited maternal mortality and economic disempowerment among the crises that current structures are not able to address—or hold governments accountable to addressing.
