The Art of Activism
by Kellee Terrell
This summer, the bravery and tenacity that ACT UP Los Angeles has demonstrated over the past 20 years will be on display in a new exhibit, Silence = Death: Los Angeles AIDS Activism 1987–2007. In 25 stark black-and-white photos, ACT UP LA member Chuck Stallard captures the organization as it fights the powers that be with guerrilla activism and catchy slogans.
“I hope [the photos] send some very necessary information to people who are going to face the next great life-or-death protest struggles against a government which refuses to listen in time,“ says show curator Stuart Timmons.
The images make a rowdy argument that anger can be beautiful. For more info, visit www.drkrm.com.
