Now available for people starting their first HIV-drug combo: the protease inhibitor (PI) Prezista (darunavir). In 2006, the PI was approved for people who’d already taken HIV meds. This past October, the FDA authorized Prezista, boosted by low-dose Norvir (ritonavir), for first-timers as well (they’ll take 800 milligrams Prezista with 100 mg Norvir once a day). Treatment experienced people still use a twice-daily 600 mg dose of Prezista plus 100 mg Norvir. A regimen containing Prezista and Norvir is taken with food.
