"Infected and Affected: Portraits of a Community Combating Stigma" is a project by photographer Joan L. Brown, which is sponsored by POZ and other organizations.
Brown asks participants to convey through physical gestures how they would fight, communicate love and express the sadness that surrounds the stigma of HIV/AIDS.
In August 2008, Brown photographed attendees of the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico City. Her subjects were both HIV positive and HIV negative.
In July 2009, Brown photographed attendees of the 5th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention Conference in Cape Town, South Africa, as well as visitors to a local HIV pediatric service. Scroll down to see video and photos from South Africa.
