No Relief for Gay Men of Color

The CDC issued a wake up call to HIV prevention groups when it released statistics showing the rate of AIDS cases among gay men of color are climbing at an alarming pace. In stark contrast to the total number of new AIDS cases resulting from gay sex, which in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco dropped between three and 20 percent since 1989, the rate of cases among black gay men in those cities skyrocketed around 50 percent. That's a disturbing figure considering these cities have the most visible AIDS service organizations in the country. Nationwide, overall gay AIDS cases increased31 percent over the past six years, while cases attributed to gay black men jumped 79 percent and those among gay Hispanic men increased 61 percent.
