The Sperm Cycle

HIVer men can’t donate—but they can still help make neggie babies. A lab process called sperm washing permits safe in-vitro fertilization (IVF), with only a tiny risk of infecting Mom or Junior. Among 39 babies born after IVF at the Bedford Stem Cell Research Foundation  in Bedford, Mass.—and more than 2,000 in Italy—not one has seroconverted. The process does not scrub virus away—it uses negative semen. Guys (on or off meds) can produce HIV-free samples. Two are collected, put in a centrifuge (to separate sperm from fluid) and prepped for IVF. Insurance pays some of the $12K bill.
