The DL Deal

A black-and-white issue

Trend spotters, take note: Despite activist criticism that the media coverage of the down low had demonized black men, a growing number of dudes of all colors are signing on as members of the DL. A recent federal survey of 455 men who have sex with men (MSMs) found that 7% of whites, 26% of Latinos and 43% of blacks self-identify as “on the DL”—rather than gay, bi or other. That’s a hefty constituency. Maybe if New Jersey’s Jim McGreevey had come out of the closet as on the DL, he would still be governor.
