Charlize in Charge

by Josh Sparber

South African HIV activist Nkosi Johnson, who died of AIDS at age 12 in 2001, will soon be reborn on celluloid. Johnson moved international audiences  at the 2000 World Aids confab, held in his homeland, by demanding meds for his countrymen. In July, Oscar-winning South African Charlize Theron signed on to coproduce a biopic inspired by New York Times reporter Jim Wooten’s best-selling personal remembrance, We Are All the Same. The orphan’s struggles—attending school, fighting stigma—may get the star treatment if Theron stars as Nkosi’s white foster mother, Gail. The real Gail will consult and plan benefit screenings for her refuge for HIV positive moms, Nkosi’s Haven, where Nkosi lives on.
