TRIAL: Gilead’s Integrase Inhibitor (GS-9137)—Study 183-0101

DESCRIPTION: This Gilead-sponsored study enrolled 40 HIV positive participants, half of whom had tried  and failed other HIV treatments in the past. Study volunteers were randomly assigned to receive one of five doses of GS-9137 or a placebo, without any other HIV drugs.

FINDINGS: After ten days of treatment, all study volunteers who took GS-9137 had viral loads that  were significantly lower than those who took a placebo. The greatest viral load reduction was seen in study volunteers who took 50 mg of GS-9137 in combination with 100 mg Norvir (ritonavir), each once a day. Any side effects seen were mild to moderate in severity.
