DESCRIPTION: For the HIV treatment-experienced, the FDA-approved dose of Reyataz (atazanavir) is 300 mg plus a single 100 mg Norvir (ritonavir) capsule, each taken once a day. BMS-089 is being conducted to determine if HIV positive people new to treatment should be treated with Reyataz with or without Norvir. The study requires everyone to take Epivir (lamivudine) with extended-release Zerit (stavudine), combined with either Reyataz/Norvir or Reyataz alone. The study will last 96 weeks. capsule, each taken once a day. BMS-089 is being conducted to determine if HIV positive people new to treatment should be treated with Reyataz with or without Norvir. FINDINGS: Approximately 200 people have been enrolled in the study. After 48 weeks, 75% of people receiving Reyataz/Norvir had viral loads below 50, compared with 70% of people receiving Reyataz without Norvir. T cells have increased by 189 in the Reyataz/Norvir group, compared with an increase of 224 in the Reyataz-alone group. Side effects leading to study discontinuation appear to be more common in the Reyataz/Norvir group (8%), compared with the Reyataz-alone group (1%).
