TRIAL: Randomised Abacavir Viread Study (RAVE)

DESCRIPTION: This British study looked at the effects on lipoatrophyside effects—in this case, the focus  was on thinning limbs—of switching from AZT (retrovir) or Zerit (d4T) to Ziagen (abacavir) or Viread (tenofovir).

FINDINGS: After 48 weeks, patients switched randomly from AZT or Zeritto Viread gained back an average of 7.7% limb fat,and those switched from AZT or Zerit to Ziagen gained about 13.5%. Also, in blood tests, cholesterol  improvementswere slightly higher in the Viread group.
