Female Condom Use on the Rise in Africa
Female condom use is gaining popularity throughout Africa, according to a study by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and reported by allAfrica.com. The increase in use is credited to grassroots campaigns using billboards, radio and TV advertisements, and targeted marketing towards groups such as hairdressers and sex workers. Despite these efforts, male condoms are more readily available and accessible. According to the UNFPA report: “The female condom is a tool for women's empowerment, enabling women and adolescent girls to take the initiative to protect their own and their partners’ health.”
